Fergus Falls — The Fergus Falls Police Department is looking to solve issues for out-state policing.

"If you are a potential candidate that is not from the traditional path to policing, that you contact our agency, and we'll certainly sit down and talk to you and see what we can do to help with that," said Fergus Falls Police Lt. Connor West.

The look of the Fergus Falls Police Department has changed since it opened in 1872 and it promises to change a lot more thanks to a new grant.

Minnesota's "Pathway to Policing" grant helps nontraditional candidates get hired as licensed peace officers in Minnesota communities like Fergus Falls.

Following the traditional route to become a police officer, West said a candidate has to obtain a two- or four-year degree, then pass the POST test to become certified.

The grant will help pay for the "Professional Peace Officer Education" program but you must have a four-year degree.

"So, depending on what they have for education and where they would need to continue their education to, to get post certified, you're looking at, I would say, at a minimum ,10 weeks, but it could be longer if they have to take some additional classes," West said.

Right now, there are three openings as the department works to find great fits for the department and the community.

"Having individuals with a diverse background in a different career field and then transitioning to the law enforcement field, again, just brings different life experiences, maturity level," West said.

The grant will be available until March 31st, 2026.

The Minnesota Office of Justice programs plans to help 20-30 departments during this time.
