The village of Canisteo's police chief resigned and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges on Thursday after a year-long investigation into allegations of misconduct, state police said.

Officials say the New York State Police Special Investigations Unit began an investigation into Kyle Amidon in April 2024 after an anonymous letter was sent to the village of Canisteo's mayor and Board of Trustees.

Police say the investigation revealed potential misconduct involving falsified time sheets and irregularities tied to the Canisteo Police Club, which officials say Amidon founded and managed.

Amidon resigned from his position as chief on Thursday, according to police, and pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class A misdemeanor.

Amidon was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay the village over $13,000 in restitution, which he paid before being sentenced.
