A U.S. Army soldier assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) was found unresponsive at their residence in Clarksville, Tenn., on November 22, 2022, according to a press release from the Army over the weekend.
Sergeant First Class Cory Burelle was a soldier in 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
“The Rakkasan family is saddened by the news of Sgt. 1st Class Burelle’s sudden and untimely death,” said 3rd Brigade commander Colonel Mark Federovich. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Born in Massachusetts on January 15, 1992, Burelle enlisted in the Army from Wilton, New Hampshire, in July of 2009. He attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Burelle was subsequently assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, where he served as a cannon crewmember. Burelle served as a gunner and section chief at Fort Carson from 2010 to 2015. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and Kuwait in 2013. Burelle was then assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in 2016. At Fort Campbell, Burelle served as a section chief, gunnery sergeant, and platoon sergeant, deploying once more to Afghanistan in 2016.
Burelle’s awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, six Army Achievement Medals, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, four Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals with a Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, two NonCommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, two NATO medals, Combat Action Badge, Marksmanship Qualification Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
Fort Campbell authorities are working with the Clarksville Police Department in its ongoing investigation.
