The Steamboat Springs water team is planning to perform its annual controlled flushing of the city’s main water line network beginning May 16.

A press release from the city said the flushing will be after the current stage of enhancements to the Fish Creek Water Treatment Plant are completed and will continue through the spring season.

“Our team is responsible for the water mains, fire hydrants, and valves that provide fire protection and potable water to your home or business,” said Michelle Carr, Distribution & Collection System Manager. “This is just one aspect of the work, which is typically out of the public view, that constantly goes into ensuring the city’s system remains in good working order for our community.”

According to a press statement from the city, system flushing is necessary to remove sediment that setlines in pipes over time, especially during low flow periods.

The work also allows every fire hydrant in the city to be serviced and tested to ensure they are in proper working condition.

The city said the annual testing and flushing work may cause residents to experience “discolored water and fluctuating water pressures,” but the water should clear up quickly and, if it does not, residents “can run cold water from a bathtub for 10 to 15 minutes.”

“However unlikely, if water doesn’t clear up, turn off tub faucet, and wait 30 to 60 minutes before attempting to clear the line again,” the city’s press statement said.

Residents may contact the Water & Utilities Department at 970-871-6303 or reach out directly to Carr, or Distribution & Collection Supervisor Brian Morse.
