Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno expressed his openness to welcoming newcomers to Jakarta after Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan.

He made this statement in response to Coordinating Minister for People's Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar's appeal, urging travelers not to bring their families to Jakarta during the return flow after "mudik" (the Indonesian tradition of returning to one's hometown for Eid al-Fitr), particularly if they lack work-related skills.

"I am open to anyone who wants to come to Jakarta. We will not carry out population control operations because we also know that Jakarta represents hope," he remarked on Saturday.

According to Rano, this policy reflects the views of Governor Pramono Anung, who came from Kediri.

"It is just like Mr. Anung. He came from Kediri and has always dreamed of coming to Jakarta. This means our people are welcome to come to Jakarta," Rano said.

However, he advised those looking for work in Jakarta to possess skills.

"We advise that people should not come empty-handed. This means they do not have skills and will be competing with residents of Jakarta. Skills are important. Hence, let us work together to build Jakarta," he stated.

The Jakarta provincial government is anticipating high levels of urban migration typically occurring after Eid al-Fitr.

Rano highlighted that the free "mudik" event organized by the provincial government and the Transportation Ministry is also intended to limit the number of travelers.

"That is actually an anticipatory measure. Our homecoming package from and to Jakarta this year has facilitated nearly 26,000 people," he explained.

He affirmed that this figure is a benchmark for the level of urbanization development in Jakarta.

Rano urged potential Jakarta newcomers to continue to abide by applicable regulations.
