A Danish tourist has left Alice Springs after she was knocked unconscious and stomped on in an unprovoked, daylight attack.

Police say the 21-year-old woman had only been in the outback town a matter of hours before the alleged assault on Tuesday afternoon.

Southern Watch Commander Marc Watson told ABC Radio Alice Springs the victim was walking along South Terrace, next to the Todd River, when a man threw rocks at her.

Commander Watson said the man then punched her, causing her to fall to the ground unconscious.

"As she lay motionless on the ground, the [alleged] offender then proceeded to stomp on her head and chest," he said.

Commander Watson said two members of the public intervened in the "shocking" incident and chased away the alleged attacker.

The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

On Wednesday morning, NT Police confirmed she had left Alice Springs and was continuing her Australian holiday at Yulara, near Uluru.

Police arrested 22-year-old Christopher Maxwell over the incident on Tuesday.

He was charged with aggravated assault, and his matter was mentioned in the Alice Springs Local Court on Wednesday.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
