PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. — In a candid message posted on the Panama City Beach Police Department's Facebook page, Police Chief J.R. Talamantez expressed gratitude to the majority of spring breakers who visited the city respectfully, while issuing a stern warning to those who caused trouble.
"Let me start by thanking those who did things the right way," Talamantez said. He acknowledged the future professionals who visited for a break, made memories, and showed respect, noting that most left without incident.
However, Talamantez did not mince words for those who brought "guns, bad intentions, and no respect" to the city. "You thought you could blend in and get away with it. You were wrong," he said, adding that many ended up in handcuffs. He described some offenders as "scared kids crying in the interview room," contrasting their behavior with their online personas.
Addressing the community, Talamantez declared, "Panama City Beach can no longer be a Spring Break town. That time is over." He emphasized the challenges and risks associated with the event, stating that it no longer aligns with the city's values or vision.
"Our law enforcement officers should not be expected to shoulder the burden of an event that no longer aligns with the values or vision of this community," Talamantez said. He announced plans for discussions with stakeholders and city leadership about the future of the Spring Break season, expressing confidence in shared concerns.
Talamantez reaffirmed the city's commitment to being a "safe, family-focused community," and concluded with a clear message: "To the good visitors, you’ll always be welcome. To the idiots, go somewhere else."
