Despite a frantic rescue effort led by local fishermen, more than 160 sheep tragically drowned in the incident. A viral video shared by the Daily Mail shows several small boats scrambling to save the scattered animals from the open sea. “Mass animal transports on ships should be banned,” a third user said.

A similar incident took place in November 2019, when the cargo ship Queen Hind capsized in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania. The ship was carrying over 14,000 sheep and was bound for Saudi Arabia. While the crew was rescued, many sheep were feared drowned, and emergency services rescued some, The Guardian reported.

In June 2022, the livestock vessel Badr 1 sank in Sudan’s Red Sea port of Suakin, drowning most of the over 15,000 sheep onboard. The crew survived the incident, the report said. In October 2024, the Pakistan Navy rescued an Iranian fishing dhow stranded in the Gulf of Aden.
