UK tourists in Spain and Portugal have been issued urgent warning following a power outage reportedly affecting large regions of Spain, Portugal, Andorra and parts of France

UK tourists in Spain, Portugal, Andorra and parts of France have been issued an urgent warning following a series of blackouts which have taken place today (April 28).

Telephone and train lines are down, with large queues of cars forming due to traffic lights not being active, according to the BBC.


Spain's electricity grid operator, Red Electrica, has confirmed power outages across the country, with the team posting to social media that it was working with energy companies to restore power to the country as quickly as possible.

The firm said it had implemented "power supply restoration plans in coordination with industry partners following the blackout across the peninsula."

It added: "The causes of the incident are being investigated, and all available resources are being allocated to resolve it as quickly as possible."

Spain's railway service, Renfe, also said the "entire National Electricity Grid was cut off" with "trains stopped without departures," at all stations, according to the publication.

Most recently, Portuguese police reported traffic lights are affected across the country, with the metro is closed in its capital city of Lisbon, as well as Porto, according to Reuters news agency.

There are reports trains are also not running in the country, as well as cash points being down.


In the most recent update, Red Electrica has said it's beginning to recover power in the north and south of the Spain, according to the BBC.

It said: "We continue working to restore power."


Images from the publication showed a chef in Madrid working with no power, while it was reported many tourists have been forced to dine and shop in the dark.

Parts of France temporarily lost power following the outages in Spain and Portugal, Reuters news agency reports, citing French grid operator RTE.

It has also been announced parts of France have temporarily lost power according to Reuters news agency reports.

A spokesperson for French grid operator RTE said that power has now resumed after the brief interruption, according to BBC reports.
