Seekonk, Massachusetts, man accused of assaulting Uber driver during ride

A Massachusetts man is facing a series of charges, accused of assaulting an Uber driver during a ride.
According to Seekonk police, officers responded to the area of County Street and Arrowhead Road at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday for a report that a female Uber driver had been assaulted by a male passenger.
“She was just scared for her life,” said witness and resident John Welcom.
The driver said she picked up a fare in North Seekonk with a destination in South Seekonk, but the man asked to be dropped off at a different location when he got in the backseat.
When they arrived at the alternate address, the man demanded that the victim back down a long, unlit driveway. At first, the driver refused but ultimately agreed to do so, police said.
While in the driveway, the man began to assault the victim, police said. The victim told police her assailant had his hands around her neck and she thought she was going to die.
The victim was able to put her vehicle in drive and drove down the road while the assault continued, police said.
The man fled the vehicle with the woman's cellphone when the vehicle stopped on a front lawn, police said. The woman honked the car horn to get the attention of the residents, who called police.
“First we heard the honking, I saw her driving erratically through the yard, down the driveway,” Welcom said. “Immediately she rolled down the window, ‘I’m an Uber driver. Some guy just tried to attack me. I’m scared for my life. Call 911.’”
James Oakes, 25, of Seekonk, was arrested on Sunday. He faces charges of strangulation or suffocation, kidnapping, assault with intent to rape, assault and battery, unarmed robbery, intimidation of a witness and interference with a ride share driver.
Oakes was arraigned Monday in Taunton District Court and was held pending a dangerousness hearing for next Monday.
