MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile Fire Rescue Department has released a statement regarding an early Saturday morning truck fire on Interstate 10 in Mobile.

Viewer-submitted video shows the fire that happened early Saturday, May 3, on eastbound Interstate 10 between Michigan Avenue and Broad Street.

The statement reads as follows:

“Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units were dispatched at about 12:37 a.m. for a report of a fire on eastbound I-10 between Michigan Avenue and Broad Street near Duval Street early Saturday morning, May 3, 2025, in Mobile, Alabama, after dispatch received two calls: one from a passerby and one from the driver of an 18-wheeler.

“Firefighters from Engines 2 and 16 arrived on scene to find an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer with heavy fire showing from the rear of the cab and the front of the trailer. The driver and occupant were safely outside the vehicle.

“Crews began to extinguish the fire. Engines used their onboard 500-gallon water tanks, swapping as they needed more water. More units, including Water Tanker 36 with its larger water tank, were dispatched to help with shuttling water to the scene. The shuttle operation required using hydrants off of the interstate.

“The trailer was filled with strawberries, and firefighters cut into it and removed some of the load to extinguish hotspots.

“During the incident, the interstate was still open to traffic, but MFRD intermittently closed it for safety and operational needs for the water shuttling.

District 1 Chief, Engines 16, 2, 9, and 3, Truck 24, and Water Tanker 36 were all dispatched to the call. No one was injured in the incident.”

Fire officials have given no word yet on the cause of the fire.
