A Michigan State Police trooper was injured and one person died in a shooting early Monday on Detroit's west side, authorities said.

Around 4:40 a.m at 20200 Murray Hill, troopers in the MSP Auto Theft team were involved in a shooting with an individual while conducting an investigation in the area of Trojan Avenue and Murray Hill Street, the agency's Second District reported on X.

During the investigation, a 23-year-old male suspect from Detroit jumped out of a vehicle firing rounds at troopers, police said.

One trooper was hit in the lower back, leg and vest. Another trooper returned fire, killing the suspect, according to MSP.

The injured trooper was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment and listed in critical condition.

The Homicide Task Force is handling the investigation. State police did not release further details.

Detroit Police officers canvas the area near Trojan Street where a Michigan State Police trooper was involved in a shooting with a suspect in the 20000 block of Murray Hill on May 5, 2025, in Detroit.

However, officials remained on site until 10:30 am. blocking off Trojan Avenue and Murray Hill Street.

As part of the investigation, they towed the suspect's vehicle from their home at 20200 Murray Hill. Authorities also knocked on the doors of Murray Hill residents to ask about the incident.

Several relatives and friends of the suspect were on the scene.

Jayvon Cobb, 29, said he was surprised his friend of several years was out at 4 a.m. and wasn't sure how the incident led to the Murray Hill resident's death.

"How did this happen in front of his house?" Cobb said. "(Police are) supposed to be serving and protecting."

The incident is the latest involving a person shot by law enforcement officials in Michigan.

Last month, a knife-wielding man was fatally shot by Ingham County Sheriff's deputies.

In March, Warren police officers fatally shot a knife-wielding man after he refused to comply with their commands to drop his weapons.

Also that month, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said her office would not charge troopers who fatally shot a man last year after he allegedly killed a Hillsdale County sheriff's deputy.

In February, Nessel said her office would not charge two Michigan State Police troopers who fatally shot an armed Flint teen in 2024 when he ran from law enforcement.
