GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Nearly two dozen witnesses and experts have taken the stand during the high-profile murder trial involving a police shooting in Michigan.
Over the span of six days of the trial, the parties called 22 witnesses and experts to testify.
After nearly two weeks of testimony, the prosecution and defense attorneys rested Monday, May 5 in the murder trial of Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr.
Jurors are deliberating over a second-degree murder charge against Schurr, 34, for the high-profile killing of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya. The jury could convict Schurr on a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
Schurr pulled over Lyoya’s car April 4, 2022, in a neighborhood on the city’s southeast side for having the wrong license plate. Lyoya, a Congolese refugee, soon after tried to flee on foot.
The two later struggled over the officer’s Taser before Schurr drew his handgun and shot Lyoya in the back of the head.
Testimony in the landmark murder trial wrapped up Monday with the prosecution and defense attorneys delivering closing arguments.
The people who testified included Lyoya’s friend who recorded part of the incident on his cell phone, two homeowners who witnessed portions of the scuffle, and Grand Rapids police officers who responded to Schurr’s call for help.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker and Schurr’s defense team – Matt Borgula, Mark Dodge and Mikayla Hamilton – each called policing experts who offered differing opinions of whether the shooting was justified.
In a pivotal moment during the trial, Schurr took the stand. For the first time, Schurr offered some insight of what happened, from his point-of-view, that morning.
