A tragic act of mob violence has resulted in the death of Patrick Ngalamulume, a respected football referee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the city of Bukavu. Ngalamulume, known locally as “Ngalas,” was lynched and set on fire by an enraged crowd in the early hours of May 6, 2025, in the Irambo neighborhood, sending shockwaves through the nation’s sporting and civic communities.
The 36-year-old official was affiliated with the Bukavu Urban Football Association (EUFBUK) and was widely admired for his professionalism and dedication to the sport. According to eyewitnesses, Ngalamulume was accused of theft without any evidence presented. The crowd responded violently, beating him and subsequently burning him alive in a brutal display of extrajudicial justice. Emergency services reportedly arrived too late to intervene, as the mob carried out the killing in full view of nearby residents.
What began as an unverified and unsubstantiated accusation quickly escalated into a deadly public execution. The incident reflects the growing lawlessness and lack of trust in the legal system in eastern Congo, where communities are increasingly vulnerable amidst civil unrest. Eyewitnesses say no one from the crowd attempted to intervene or stop the violence, highlighting the severity of the chaos that has engulfed the area.
The killing highlights the worsening security situation in the region, particularly in cities like Bukavu and Goma. Armed rebel groups such as AFC M23 have contributed to a climate of instability, leaving law enforcement agencies overstretched and unable to prevent such acts of violence. The rise in mob justice incidents underscores the urgent need for strengthened security measures and community reconciliation efforts.
Patrick Ngalamulume had no criminal record and was known for his integrity and commitment to his role as a referee. His death is a stark reminder of the dangerous and volatile environment in eastern Congo, where justice is often replaced by violence.
