The search for 60 recruits for the next police academy is now underway. The Department of Human Resources began advertising the police officer trainee positions last Thursday. Applications will close on May 20. The starting salary for recruits is $16,191. Applicants must be 18 years or older and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents.
Commissioner of Public Safety Taaga Saite Moliga says there have been some inquiries from off-island for the academy slots. While previous academies have set the starting age at 21, the commissioner said that because of the number of recruits they are seeking, he felt it was necessary to lower the age requirement to 18.
All applicants will sit for a written exam, and those who pass will move on to the next stage. Candidates will undergo a physical test and background checks.
The academy is scheduled to begin in June and is expected to last four to five months.
