KALAMAZOO, MI — Police arrested a juvenile suspect while investigating a string of vehicle break-ins, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety reports.
The juvenile was taken into custody Wednesday, May 7, after more than 30 larcenies from vehicles in campus area neighborhoods were reported, KDPS said.
Officers responded to reports of suspicious activity in the 1700 block of Lafayette Avenue and at least three juveniles fled on foot, KDPS said.
Police used the drone and apprehended one suspect, who was held on an apprehend and detain order and charges related to larceny from vehicles.
Preliminary investigation revealed that between 30 and 40 vehicle break-ins occurred throughout the evening, police said.
The incidents occurred primarily at apartment complexes near Western Michigan University, along West Main Street, Drake Road, West Michigan Avenue and Lafayette Avenue.
The suspects targeted unlocked vehicles, police said, and no forced entry or damage has been reported. Stolen items include credit cards, identification cards, cash and other valuables left inside vehicles.
KDPS officers will remain active in the area throughout the week as the investigation continues.
Residents and property managers are encouraged to check surveillance footage and contact KDPS if they have information to help the investigation, KDPS said.
Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact the KDPS Criminal Investigations Division at 269-337-8139 or provide information anonymously through the Kalamazoo Silent Observer tip line at 269-343-2100, the “P3Tips” app, or at www.KalamazooSilentObserver.com.
