Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Delhi government on Thursday sounded a high alert and cancelled all leave applications of government employees.

The move comesafter India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was launched in response to a terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam town, which claimed 26 lives.

The Delhi administration mobilised its entire disaster management and health response apparatus. District Magistrates across the city have begun conducting high-level meetings to assess emergency preparedness.

“Police will stay alert and active. Night patrols have been intensified and additional forces will be deployed in all sensitive zones,” a senior police officer said.

In a late-night order, the Delhi government barred employees from taking leave until further notice.

“In view of the prevailing situation and preparedness for emergency response, no leave shall be granted,” the order stated.

Security build-up

Senior officials in New Delhi and East Delhi districts confirmed review meetings are under way to identify gaps in quick-response mechanisms and boost coordination among departments.

Security has been significantly heightened across the Capital. Paramilitary forces have been deployed at critical infrastructure, including markets, metro stations, hotels, residential colonies, and airports, according to an official.

Police checks at city entry points have intensified, with all incoming vehicles being screened. Special Commissioners and DCPs in all 15 districts are coordinating round the clock with ACPs and SHOs tasked with monitoring law and order.

At Mayur Vihar Phase-1 metro station, police conducted a security inspection, reviewing 41 operational CCTV cameras and CISF deployment patterns.

“We’re ensuring 24x7 security with increased staff presence,” said DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania.

Anti-sabotage measures are also under way. “Our Bomb Disposal Squad conducted checks at malls, hotels, and key public locations to prevent any threat,” said DCP (South West) Surendra Choudhary.
