Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the cause of a major fire which tore through a Norwich church last month remains undetermined.

Around 50 firefighters from eight crews responded to the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Plumstead Road shortly after 2.30pm on Saturday, April 27.

The blaze broke out during the church’s second service of the day, but everyone inside - including children - was safely evacuated.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “We have concluded our fire investigation.

"Due to the scale of the damage, which also made the building unsafe to enter, the cause is undetermined.

"However, we do not believe it to be deliberate.”

The fire sparked a huge emergency response and drew concern from the local community.

Sadie Barr, a customer assistant at the Tesco Express on Plumstead Road, witnessed the dramatic scene unfold.

“Tesco and other businesses donated sandwiches and water during the fire, but we felt that wasn’t enough.”

Now Tesco and Café 193 have teamed up to organise a “Brew for a Crew” fundraiser in support of the Fire Fighters Charity.

The event will take place on Monday, May 12, from 3pm to 5.30pm at Café 193, with tea, coffee and biscuits provided by Tesco through their Community Champions scheme.

The owner of Cafe 193, Indrit Seidaj, said: “Until you see those guys in the middle of the smoke and fire, you don’t understand how important they are.

"We are so lucky to have them.”

Shocking drone footage by Kurtis Carr revealed the scale of destruction, with flames and thick smoke pouring from the church’s roof.
