A body has been discovered near the finishing line of one of the most popular sporting events in Ireland.

The body was found near the race track of the North West 200 in Co. Antrim on Friday.

The PSNI has launched an investigation following the unsettling discovery on Ballyreagh Road in Portrush on Friday morning.

It's believed that the body was found not far from the start/finish line of the North West 200.

In a statement from the PSNI, it was confirmed: "Police in Coleraine are investigating the discovery of a body in the Ballyreagh Road area of Portrush, following a report made shortly after 9.30am this morning, Friday 9th May."

"There are no further details at this time," the PSNI added.

The North West 200 is one of the most prestigious motorcycling road races. The first race was held in 1929. The famous street circuit runs between what has become known as 'the triangle' which comprises of the three towns of Portstewart, Coleraine and Portrush on the famous Causeway Coast in the North of Ireland.
