A stretch of the A40 across the Gloucestershire border has been closed following a serious crash involving a motorcyclist today (Friday, May 9). The collision has happened near Monmouth in Wales, closed to the border with the Forest of Dean, and long delays are reported.
It is understood the air ambulance was called to the scene of the collision and the motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries. The road has been closed in both directions and reports on social media have described 'total mayhem'.
Gwent Police said on X: "Emergency services are dealing with a road traffic collision on the A40, both directions are closed between Mitchell Troy and Monmouth. Please avoid the area and find alternative routes for your journey."
The eastbound side is closed from the Raglan Interchange to the Gibraltar Tunnels. The westbound side is also closed but from the Gibraltar Tunnels to where traffic joins from Mitchel Troy to assist

Eastbound: The A40 Eastbound closed due to accident investigation work from A449 (Raglan Interchange, Raglan) to B4293 Cinderhill Street (Gibraltar Tunnels, Monmouth). Traffic is coping well.
Trapped traffic has been released in both directions. The Westbound side is also closed but from the Gibraltar Tunnels to where traffic joins from Mitchel Troy to assist.
Westbound: The A40 Westbound closed, severe delays due to an accident on the other side from B4293 (Gibraltar Tunnels, Monmouth) to Mitchel Troy (Mitchel Troy). Congestion to Whitchurch. Surrounding routes around Monmouth are also heavily congested as traffic seeks an alternative.
Trapped traffic has been released in both directions. Westbound side is closed from Gibraltar Tunnels to where traffic joins from Mitchel Troy to assist with the accident on the opposite side. The Eastbound side is closed from the Raglan Interchange.

I can confirm that Wales Air Ambulance attended an emergency on the A40 in Monmouthshire today (09/05/25). Our Dafen-based crew attended by air and arrived on scene at 12:01. Our involvement concluded at 13:30

There are severe delays westbound on the A40 at Westbound.
Surrounding routes around Monmouth are also heavily congested as traffic seeks an alternative.
Police statement

Gwen police said:
We received a report of a road traffic collision, involving a motorcycle, on the A40 at around 11.25am on Friday 9 May.
Officers attended, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Welsh Air Ambulance.
The motorcyclist, a man in his fifties, has been taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Queueing traffic and traffic heavier than normal on M4 Westbound from J23 M48 to J23A A4810 (Magor Services).
There were animals in the road Westbound at J23, this has been clear a while however the delays linger here.

It is understood from Gwent Police that a male motorcyclist in his 50s has been taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
