WE HAVE NEW DETAILS ON A FATAL COLLISION INVOLVING A DUMP TRUCK AND A PEDESTRIAN IN NEWPORT LAST WEEK. LAST WEDNESDAY, NEWPORT POLICE RESPONDED TO THE SCENE AT SUNAPEE AND CENTRAL STREETS, WHERE THE VICTIM, 34-YEAR OLD ZACHARY SHEPARD HAD BEEN HIT. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS LATER PRONOUNCED DEAD. POLICE HAVE IDENTIFIED THE DRIVER OF THE DUMP TRUCK AS 38 YEAR OLD CHARLES DERAWAY. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THEY FOUND THAT DERAWAY WAS PREPARING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN ON TO SUNAPEE STREET, WHEN HE FAILED TO MAKE A COMPLETE STOP AND HIT SHEPARD AS HE WAS CROSSING THE ROAD. A Newport, New Hampshire, man has been arrested following a deadly crash involving a dump truck last week.The Newport Police Department charged 38-year-old Charles Deraway with negligent homicide and assault after police said he hit and killed a pedestrian while driving a dump truck.According to investigators, Deraway was driving a dump truck east on Central Street when he failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign, hitting and killing 34-year-old Zackary Shepard as he was in the crosswalk.Shepard was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment, but died of his injuries a short time later.Deraway is due in court Monday afternoon to answer to the charges.
