Teen accused in murder of KC restaurant owner will not be tried as an adult
A judge has determined a teenager charged in the shooting of a Kansas City restaurant owner will not be certified as an adult.
The ruling was made Wednesday by Judge Jennifer Phillips.
A 15-year-old was charged last year with killing Shaun Brady. A judge ruled Wednesday that he will remain in the juvenile system.
Brady, the owner of Brady & Fox, was killed behind his restaurant on 63rd Street in Brookside.
The teenager was charged with second-degree murder, attempted stealing and armed criminal action.
Police say Brady was killed during an attempted car theft.
Realtor Butch Rigby, who owned the space for Brady's restaurant, expressed his difficulty in comprehending why the suspect will not face the full punishment that being tried as an adult would have brought.
"We do remember he is innocent until proven guilty," Rigby said. "And I recognize that. But I think the consequences have got to be there to show the community that this kind of action will not be tolerated."
Brady was well-known and loved around Kansas City, particularly Kansas City’s Irish community. The shooting received attention around the world, with media outlets in Ireland reporting on the case extensively.
A second teenager was also initially charged, but charges were dropped in December 2024.
The teen's attorney declined to comment at the Family Justice Center on Wednesday, as those who loved Shaun Brady await the next steps.
"It's going to take a little while to digest," Rigby said.
The trial is scheduled to begin in September.
