Augusta County Sheriff: Waynesboro man dead after boat accident in Lyndhurst

A Waynesboro man is dead following a boat accident in Lyndhurst.
The Augusta County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call on May 13 at approximately 3:10 p.m. The caller reported that a male subject had gone under water and not resurfaced off Mountain Side Lane in the Lyndhurst area of Augusta County, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.
The incident occurred while the male victim and a friend were on the lake attempting to move a floating dock, the sheriff's office said. During the process, the boat they were using began taking on water and eventually capsized, throwing both men into the lake. One male was able to make it out of the water; however, the second male submerged and did not resurface.
Emergency personnel from Preston Yancey Fire Department, Augusta County Fire and Rescue, Waynesboro First Aid Crew, Waynesboro Fire Department, and New Hope Fire Department responded to the scene. First responders arrived at approximately 3:31 p.m.
The Virginia State Police Search & Rescue and Underwater Recovery Unit also responded to assist in the operation. The submerged victim was located, recovered from the water, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident concluded at 12:42 a.m. May 14.
The victim has been identified as John Joseph Lacy Jr., 84, of Waynesboro.
