Funding green light for airport security and safety measures

Kerry Airport has received a substantial allocation of funding

A total of €1.813 million in Exchequer funding has been approved for capital projects at Kerry Airport under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025.

The funding, announced by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, will support a wide range of critical safety, security and sustainability upgrades at the airport.

Projects receiving support include the installation of electric ground service equipment, snow-clearing machinery, fire safety improvements and enhancements to navigational and security infrastructure.

Kerry TD Michael Cahill described it as fantastic news for Kerry Airport and for the wider region.

“This funding will help future-proof the airport by investing in essential safety equipment, modernising operational infrastructure and supporting our transition to more sustainable airport services,” he said.

Deputy Cahill said it is important to recognise the unwavering dedication and outstanding work of Kerry Airport chief executive John Mulhearn, chief financial officer Basil Sheerin and all the staff who consistently deliver top-class service to all who pass through its doors.

Kerry Airport is a cornerstone of our tourism economy and local community. These upgrades will enhance safety and reliability for passengers while also positioning the airport to meet future environmental standards,” Deputy Cahill stated.

Kerry Airport Ireland has welcomed the announcement of over €1.8 million in funding from the Department of Transport to deliver capital programmes required to support services and ensure safety at regional airports.

Projects in receipt of grant aid under the scheme are covered under the Project Ireland 2040 strategy.

“Kerry Airport is very grateful to the government to be supported by this long-term strategy through which the airport is becoming a more resilient and sustainable hub for connectivity here in Kerry,” a spokesman said.

The grant support announced by the minister will go towards the development and enhancement of security, runway remedial works and taxiway markings, baggage equipment and transport and the purchase of new fully-electric ground power unit.

The funding will help to ensure that Kerry Airport remains compliant with regulatory requirements in key areas, such as air traffic control, fire services and security, while delivering a greener operational environment.

The funding for Kerry Airport will go towards the following projects:
* Navigational aid test equipment
* Repair to localiser
* Oversize baggage dual view x-ray unit
* Pavement classification rating assessment
* Fire fighting personal protective equipment
* Security perimeter access road
* Electric ground power unit
* Electric Aviramp
* Two snow-clearing vehicles
* Aerodrome markings
* Electric tug

This funding forms part of the nearly €8 million allocation made by the Department of Transport to support regional airports in Kerry, Donegal and Ireland West (Knock) in 2025.
