‘A sad and tragic day’ – Pensioner dies after being hit by bus in Co Louth, becoming fifth woman to die on Irish roads since Saturday


A pedestrian aged in her 80s has died following a road collision in Co Louth this afternoon.
The incident between the pedestrian and a bus took place in Dunleer at about 12:20pm on Lower Main Street
The woman was transferred by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was later pronounced dead.
Four other women lost their lives in separate road crashes over the weekend in counties Meath, Wexford, Clare and Tyrone.
The road has been closed for a technical examination of the scene to be conducted and diversions are in place.
Louth County Councillor and neighbour, Cllr Bernie Conlon, said that she is in shock along with many in Dunleer today. Conlon passed on her condolences to all affected by the incident.
The independent councillor said that the woman was “a lovely neighbour with a heart of gold”.

“It’s so sad that at her age she lost her life through tragic circumstances, and I am deeply saddened for the whole community. Everybody knew her, she was salt of the earth.
“I am so sorry for the emergency services, gardaí, paramedics, and fire brigade that came on such a heartbreaking accident and I feel for the bus driver as well,” Conlon said.
Local Councillor John Sheridan, Chairperson of Ardee Municipal Area said it is “a dark day” for Dunleer and also expressed his sympathy to family and friends of the deceased.
“Dunleer is a bustling community and the family are well-known and liked by all, so it is a sad and tragic day. My thoughts are with the family, friends and everyone involved,” he said.
Investigating Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
Any road users who were at Lower Main Street, Dunleer, between 12:10pm and 12:30pm on Monday, 26th May and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
