The body was found in the Congaree River shortly after noon Sunday in Richland County, sister-station WIS reported.

A man called 911 to alert authorities, and when they arrived, they found the body in the water near a boat landing along Highway 601. Officials confirmed that the person was dead.

As of Sunday evening, officials had not said if the body was a man or woman, nor how old the person was. The Richland County Sheriff’s Office told WIS it was unclear how the person died.

Along with the sheriff’s office, firefighters and the South Carolina Department of Nature Resources also responded to the river.

The Congaree River is about 50 miles long and is in the central part of South Carolina. It begins where the Broad and Saluda rivers converge, and goes all the way down to the Wateree River and Lake Marion.
