A mass shooting on a boat in a South Carolina beach town has left at least 11 people injured.

Gunfire erupted as the Hurricane II chartered boat docked at a marina on the Intracoastal Waterway in the town of Little River, 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, at about 9.30pm local time on Sunday, police said.

The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation and no arrests have been made, according to the Horry County police department.

Emergency services transported 11 people to nearby hospitals. Investigators said they had received reports that more victims made their way to hospital in private vehicles. Their conditions have not been released.

Police said it appeared to be an isolated incident and there was no ongoing threat to local residents. They have not released any information about a motive or possible suspects.

Video captured from the scene showed dozens of police cars and ambulances rushing in and out of the area.

A North Myrtle Beach police officer who was called to the shooting accidentally shot himself in the leg at a marina about three miles away, a police spokeswoman said. He is in hospital in a stable condition.

The Little River marina remained closed on Monday morning, with crime scene tape cordoning off an entrance.

The Hurricane II is a for-charter party and fishing boat operated by the Little River Fishing Fleet, part of the Hurricane Fishing Fleet in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. An employee said the shooting remained under investigation and they were unable to provide further information.

The shooting occurred over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, when millions of Americans commemorate servicemen and women who died while serving in the US military.

The Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings in the US, reported that 5,747 people have died from gunshot wounds in the US so far this year. That figure includes deaths from accidental shootings.

On Saturday night, 19 concertgoers were injured in a stampede at a concert in Atlantic Beach, about nine miles southeast of Little River.

Police said several fights broke out during a Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival event, sending the crowd running in panic. No arrests have been made. The festival draws thousands of bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts to South Carolina each year.
