      HELP THEM DETAIN THAT SUSPECT. A SINGLE GUNSHOT RATTLING PEOPLE ON BUSY CAMBRIDGE STREET, JUST STEPS FROM MASS GENERAL HOSPITAL AROUND 830 THIS MORNING. BOSTON POLICE SAY A MAN WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES CONFRONTED AN OFFICER. HE KNOCKED THE HAT OFF THE OFFICER AND THEN BEGAN TO GRAPPLE WITH THE OFFICER AND GOT AHOLD TO HIS GUN, TRIED TO TAKE HIS GUN, AND DURING THAT PERIOD HE WAS ENDED UP SHOOTING WHAT WE BELIEVE HE SHOT HIMSELF. I HEARD A POP. EDDIE RIVERA WAS WORKING ACROSS THE STREET WHEN HE HEARD THE GUNSHOT. HE’S ONE OF TWO BYSTANDERS WHO JUMPED INTO ACTION. AND YOU WENT OVER AND YOU TACKLED HIM, OR HE WAS ALREADY ON THE GROUND. I JUST JUMPED ON HIS CHEST TO HOLD HIM DOWN TO ASSIST THE OFFICERS. THEN I GRABBED HIS WRIST SO HE WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO FLAIL AROUND AND GRAB ANYTHING. VIDEO SHOWS THE MOMENTS AFTER POLICE HAVE THE SUSPECT ON THE GROUND. OFFICIALS SAY HE WAS SHOT IN THE FOOT AND IS EXPECTED TO BE OKAY. BOSTON POLICE SAY AN OFFICER ON A DETAIL NEARBY ALSO RESPONDED TO HELP THE COMMISSIONER, PRAISING THE GOOD SAMARITANS. WE ARE VERY THANKFUL TO THE BYSTANDERS THAT ANY TIME THAT THEY WANT TO, YOU KNOW, GET INVOLVED TO HELP US, WE APPRECIATE IT TREMENDOUSLY. RIVERA SAYS HE DID NOT HESITATE AFTER HEARING POLICE CALL FOR HELP. I FEEL GOOD, AS YOU CAN SEE, I’M A LITTLE SWEATY, STILL RUNNING ON A LITTLE BIT OF ADRENALINE, BUT I FEEL GOOD. I THOUGHT I DID SOMETHING GOOD. THE OFFICER WHO WAS CONFRONTED, HE IS OKAY. AND AGAIN, THE SUSPECT IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE.       A man grabbed a gun from a Boston police officer and shot himself during a confrontation with the officer Tuesday near Massachusetts General Hospital, police said.The man, who appeared to be suffering from a mental health issue, approached an officer who was working a detail on Cambridge Street at 8:42 a.m. The man was able to get the officer's gun following a brief altercation, and he shot himself, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said. "He discharged at least one round, injuring himself," Cox said.The officer along with other officers and a bystander were able to detain the man, who was taken into custody. The man's name has not been released."They were able to subdue the individual (who had the) firearm. He is under arrest. He is being treated at an area hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound," Cox said. "We are very thankful that no one was seriously injured and that the officer is doing OK."Eddy Rivera, of Cambridge, was across the street when he heard the commotion and ran to help."I just jumped on his chest to hold him down, to assist the officers. Then I grabbed his wrist so he wouldn't be able to flail around or grab anything. Then the cops put him in cuffs," Rivera said.Rivera said by the time he reached the other side of the street, the gun was no longer in the suspect’s hands. We are thankful that the Boston police officers on scene contained the situation so that it resulted in no injuries to themselves or members of the public and apparent minimal injury to the suspect involved," a spokesperson said in a statement,During the incident, Massachusetts General Hospital remained opened, a spokesperson said.
