NH State Police Say Dozens Of Drivers Seen Driving 90 MPH-Plus On Memorial Day: Roundup

CONCORD, NH — Dozens of vehicles were stopped in the Granite State Memorial Day Weekend as part of a traffic enforcement initiative by New Hampshire State Police.

During the enforcement, troopers from the Special Enforcement Unit patrolled both on the ground and in the air. On Monday, troopers focused on Interstate 93 north in Salem and reported 111 motor vehicle violations — including excessive speed, cell phone use, following too closely, “move over,” and reckless driving. Troopers accused 42 drivers of traveling 90 mph or more and six of 100 mph or more.

Around 7:45 a.m., troopers tracked a 2024 Corvette driving 110 mph and attempted to stop the vehicle. Instead, the driver of the Corvette, Brandon E. Babcock, 22, of Salem, Massachusetts, was accused of increasing the speed of his vehicle and driving reckless, and passing other vehicles, across all other lanes of travel, Michal Sventek, a public information officer for state police, said.

“(A) trooper monitored the vehicle from the state police aircraft, noting speeds of approximately 140 mph before the driver of the Corvette got off the interstate at Exit 3 and continued onto side roads in Windham,” he said. “(The) trooper maintained visual contact with the Corvette and guided Troopers to its location. Ultimately, (a trooper sergeant) conducted a traffic stop on Johnson Road.”

Babcock was arrested and charged with reckless driving and disobeying an officer. He is due in Salem District Court on July 17.

Sventek said reckless driving penalties include a $620 fine and a mandatory 60-day license suspension. He added that the fine for traveling 86 mph or higher is $434.

Mass. Driver Accused Of Driving 120 MPH In Ossipee

A man from Peabody, MA, was also arrested on Sunday afternoon, accused of recklessly driving in Ossipee.

Jacob Driscoll, 28, was stopped just before 3 p.m. after a state trooper accused him of driving 120 mph on Route 16, more than double the speed limit. He was stopped and charged with reckless operation. Driscoll was released on personal recognizance and is due in Ossipee District Court on July 30.

Truck Rollover In Portsmouth

Thursday morning, state police were sent to an Interstate 95 onramp for a rollover crash involving a tractor-trailer around 8 a.m.

Sventek said the crash was reported in the area of the traffic circle and the northbound side of I-95 in Portsmouth.

“The preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that Dean A. Merritt, 54, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, had been driving a 2014 Peterbilt 388 truck towing a 2003 Heil Trailer,” he said, “carrying concrete mixing dust, when he failed to negotiate a curve, causing the truck and trailer to cross the left shoulder of the on-ramp and overturn.”

Merritt was assisted out of the truck and taken to the hospital for minor injuries. He was cited for negligent driving.

The area was closed for about four hours during the investigation and cleanup. Assisting troopers were Portsmouth police, Portsmouth fire and rescue teams, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, and New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
