SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – Illinois lawmakers have unanimously passed Anna’s Law, a bill that would require all police officers to undergo trauma-informed sexual assault training before taking their oath—and repeat it every three years. The legislation now awaits the governor’s signature.
Named after 23-year-old Anna Williams, a sexual assault survivor who experienced police insensitivity during her case in 2021, the bill ensures officers are trained to minimize victim retraumatization and handle potential conflicts of interest.
Introduced by Sen. Mary Edly-Allen (D-Libertyville) and backed in the House by Rep. Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee), the bill reflects bipartisan support for improving how law enforcement addresses sexual assault.
Williams, whose personal experience inspired the legislation, said its passage helps her—and hopefully others—feel heard, respected, and empowered.
