A Baylor football died during a visit to his home state of Mississippi, the school announced Wednesday.
Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Alex Foster was 18.
The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson reported that he died after a shooting in the 1800 block of East Alexander Street near the intersection with North Colorado Street on Wednesday.
Police responded to the scene and found a male shot multiple times in a car. He was transferred to Delta Health Center, where he died 35 minutes later, according to the newspaper.
“We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a beloved member of our football family,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Mack B. Rhoades said in a statement.
“Our deepest condolences are with Alex’s family and all who loved him, as we lift them up in prayer now and in the days to come. In this time of deep sorrow, we draw strength from our faith, the love of the Baylor community, and the unbreakable bond forged through the game we love. Alex’s memory will forever be part of our hearts and this program.”
Head coach Dave Aranda posted a separate message on X, writing, “Our hearts are broken, and our prayers are with his family, friends and all those who loved him so deeply.”
Foster, who was listed at 6-foot-5 and 292 pounds, played high school football for St. Joseph Catholic School in Madison, Mississippi.
He was a three-star recruit in the 2024 class. He did not play last season while redshirting but was expected to contribute for the Bears in 2025.
