Police broke up a three-week occupation at the Renamo party headquarters in Maputo city today, firing tear gas and arresting most of the former guerrillas who had been occupying the house for three weeks. Three of them were injured and hospitalised. The attached video circulating on social media shows riot police and smoke billowing at the party’s HQ in central Maputo, and former guerrillas dispersing. Another group of former guerrillas this morning occupied the office of party leader Ossufo Momade, but were made to leave by the police. They also threatened to occupy Momade’s residence. The group is demanding Momade’s resignation, alleging mismanagement of the party. Details of the case are still emerging, but the kidnapping attracted a vigorous and reasonably quick police response, with armoured cars sent out and vehicles being searched. Given the speed with which the child was set free, it is unlikely that the MZN6m ransom was paid; kidnapping operations typically take longer, especially when ransoms of this size are demanded.
