An Owenton man was charged with assaulting a man who he claims made threats against his daughter, according to documents on file in Owen County District Court.

Charged in the incident was Virgil Ray Johns, 60, of Madison Street, who faces one count of fourth-degree assault (minor injury), court documents show.

Police were dispatched when Zackery Knapp called and said he was punched in the face multiple times by Johns, who is described in a police citation as stepfather in-law. Police say Knapp left the scene of the incident and went to stay with a friend in Warsaw, according to the report.

When confronted by police, Johns allegedly admitted that he punched Knapp in the face two times “for making threats to his daughter over the phone prior to his arrival,” court records show.

Police said several witnesses saw what took place.

Johns was scheduled to be arraigned June 5 in Owen County District Court.
