RUMFORD, Maine (WGME) -- Police say a “known menace” stole a chainsaw from a Rumford store and threatened to spray the employees who tried to stop him with a chemical agent.
Police say they responded to the Tractor Supply in Rumford on May 23 for a report of a robbery.
According to police, a suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Bryan Festus Wood of Mexico, stole a chainsaw from the store and, when confronted by store employees, threatened to spray them with what was believed to be a chemical agent.
Police say a good Samaritan intervened to help the store employees, and the suspect ran off.
No one was hurt.
On Wednesday, police say they arrested Wood and charged him with robbery. He was taken to the Oxford County Jail.
Rumford Police Chief Tony Milligan says Wood has an extensive criminal history in Maine. In 2013, he was charged in a string of arsons in Lewiston. However, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial.
“His arrest and incarceration bring a level of relief and reassurance to the community, as a known menace with a demonstrated disregard for the safety of others is once again behind bars,” Milligan said. “Our community is safer with this individual off the streets. We remain committed to holding violent offenders accountable and protecting the people of Rumford.”
