29-year-old Chad New remembers when he excelled as a freshman in football at Foley High School.
That was 14 years ago, before a serious car accident left him and four friends injured.
Chad says they had been huffing canned air when the driver blacked out, the car hitting a tree.
For Chad, it would permanently change his life.
"We all suffered injuries," he says. "Unfortunately, I got paralyzed."
Paralyzed from the neck down.
Today, he stays connected by using a mouth-controlled device to operate a laptop computer, even giving motivational speeches and words of warning to students.
"Well, I try to inspire kids, be more inspirational to kids not to make the same mistake I made."
Still, his life has been one of daily challenges.
But tonight, he may be facing his biggest challenge since the accident.
He and his family are about to be evicted from a home they thought they had rented.
"I came across a post on Facebook that said the house was $900. And so, my parents went out and met the guy. And the guy let them in, showed them around."
His parents paid the man $2200 to cover the first month's rent and deposit, even signed a lease before getting the key.
But Chad says the company leasing the house would later tell them that guy wasn't their guy.
"I mean, he gives you a key and makes you sign this and that's hard not to Believe. And I asked the company how he got the key and they said he used my information. And I was like, what does my information got to do with it?"
It gets worse.
Chad says the real estate company then told them they'd have to move out in one day.
They've now been given five days, but that ends Sunday, and they have nowhere to go, and no money to get there.
"That's still impossible. I'm on a ventilator. I depend on my mom to take care of me, and it's impossible. And then they told me I'm going to jail if I don't get out in five days."
Before sharing his story with me, Chad and his family also shared it with Foley Police, who tell me they are working the case, and have offered Chad a little bit of comfort.
"The police, the new investigator that's investigating it called me and said that I'm not going to jail. He doesn't even know if the people are real."
Meanwhile, his mom hasn't even unpacked, not knowing what the future brings.
"I am worried. I worry a lot," she says. "I cry a lot. I've been through a lot with my son for 14 years. I've taken care of him since day one."
Chad says the family has been referred to as squatters.
Not true, he says, just unwitting victims of a man who took advantage of a family in a tough situation.
"Well, I would like to get justice, the guy get caught, but also, I'd like to get my money back, money to help me get into another place so I'm not going to no nursing home."
As Foley police continue to investigate, Chad New and his family have no idea if they'll ever see their rent and deposit money again.
But Chad and his supporters have set up a gofundme account, hoping he'll get enough help to find an affordable place for his family to live.
