One person has died and multiple others were injured after a tornado touched down in Kentucky's Washington County early on Friday morning.
"We are deeply saddened to report one fatality and multiple people injured during today's storm," the Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a post on Facebook. "Please be respectful during this time. Prayers are needed for this family and our county."
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had earlier told residents in the state to "stay alert" as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a number of tornado warnings.
Washington County Sheriff's Office said it had received "multiple emergency calls" with various local and state crews responding and urged people to "please stay off the roads" for now.
"There is severe tornado damage and multiple injuries of people throughout Washington County. Please stay home to allow Emergency Responders to do their job," the sheriff's office said.
Beshear posted to X that the "level of severe weather was unexpected, with a system still moving through the state".
"We also expect to see additional storms today with Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky facing a risk of more severe weather. Please be alert this morning and stay safe," the governor said.
Beshear had warned of "severe weather currently moving through Kentucky that is producing tornado warnings. Please stay alert this morning and check the weather before traveling."
The NWS had issued tornado warnings early in the morning for the following areas in Kentucky: Munfordville, Pike View, Canmer, Lebanon, Raywick, Calvary, Larue County, Marion County, Taylor County, Perryville, Nevada, Nicholasville, Wilmore, and Burgin.
"Scattered thunderstorms are expected today," says the Kentucky weather forecast from the NWS.
"Isolated strong to severe storms are possible early this morning in south-central Kentucky. Isolated damaging winds and a brief tornado are the main severe weather hazards. Torrential rainfall could lead to localized minor flooding."
Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Tennessee on Friday morning as the storm moved across.
Tornadoes, Flooding Hit Kentucky in 2025
Kentucky was badly hit by recent tornadoes, with at least 19 killed. It also experienced devastating floods earlier in the year, killing at least 29 people, and from which some areas have struggled to recover.
It was one of eight states approved by President Donald Trump for disaster relief from FEMA in response to the destruction caused by the severe weather and its impact on local populations.
The NWS office in Jackson, Kentucky, lacked a permanent overnight forecaster during the recent storms because of federal spending cuts, meaning it had to rely on cover staff.
