As dusk falls this Saturday, 17,000 runners will embark on Luxembourg City's signature nighttime marathon, supported by thousands of volunteers and an extensive police operation to manage the 42km route.

Luxembourg City prepares to host the 18th ING Night Marathon on Saturday, 31 May, with organisers expecting to set a new record of 17,000 participants from 117 countries – a significant increase from the 6,000 runners in the inaugural 2006 event.

The marathon will start at 7pm from Kirchberg, with runners following a 42.195 km route through Limpertsberg, Belair, Merl, Hollerich, the Gare neighbourhood, and the city centre before returning to the starting point. Thousands of volunteers will support participants along the course.

Traffic management

City officials emphasise all neighbourhoods will remain accessible during the event. Police and municipal authorities have implemented measures to minimise disruption, including reserving road sections along the route exclusively for runners during the race.

A total of 40 strategically placed crossing points will allow controlled vehicle movement, with all affected roads reopening after the last participant passes. Real-time traffic adjustments will be made throughout the event to accommodate both runners and residents.

Transport and parking

Public transport will operate normally until around 6pm, with exceptions for Limpertsberg and Kirchberg plateau services, which will end at 4pm. After 6pm, regular bus routes between the central station and city centre will be suspended, with tram services maintaining connections between Place Émile Hamilius and the central station.

Spectators can access the Bouillon, Luxembourg-Sud, and Stade de Luxembourg parking areas via shuttle buses. Luxembourg City authorities strongly encourage the use of public transportation to navigate the city during the event.

Police presence and security

A significant police presence will be deployed to manage the expected tens of thousands of spectators and ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the marathon. Officers will monitor key intersections, enforce parking restrictions, and oversee designated diversions in coordination with local authorities.

Visitors are urged to adhere to traffic barriers, follow diversion routes, and comply with instructions from traffic officers to facilitate safe and efficient movement across the city during the event.
