We've got you covered with this bumper guide

Lightning Seeds

The full lineup for this year's Stendhal Festival has now been announced, with acts such as Mr Scruff joining the likes of The Lightning Seeds, Kate Nash and The Orb on the bill.

The likes of Mark McCabe, Lisa McHugh and comedian Ed Byrne were confirmed in the first part of the line-up announcement back in April.

The second wave of musical acts confirmed by the organisers for this year's festival at Ballymully Cottage Farm near Limavady in Co Derry includes a total of 50 more artists, including fast-rising Dublin rockers Sprints. The hugely influential UK DJ Mr. Scruff will be joined onstage by MC Kwasi.

Belfast Live has now compiled a guide with everything you need to know about the acts confirmed for Stendhal this year.

The organisers first line-up announcement also included electronic music legends The Orb, following an unexpected, last-minute cancellation when they were billed to play last year. And Fionn Regan, a Mercury and Choice Award nominated singer-songwriter, will also take to the Stendhal stage for the first time when the festival returns over July 4, 5, and 6 this year.

Festival Director Ross Parkhill says he is delighted with how the full line-up has shaped up this year.

“I’m really pleased with it overall,” he said, “We have some amazing acts top to bottom and while it's great to be able to say the likes of The Lightning Seeds, Kate Nash, Mr. Scruff and Ed Byrne, all great names to have on any bill, are playing this year, it gives me a bit more pleasure to be able to say that the likes of Sprints and Joshua Burnside are at the top of the bill too.

"Acts that have been on our bill before at lower levels, that have grown into powerful draws and can now rightfully command higher billings and bigger stages. Josh sells out the Ulster Hall, while Sprints, who played our Henry McCullough Stage in 2023, absolutely exploded in popularity in 2024 after they released their first album."

Ross added: “As always we have an eclectic mix of genres, loads of absolutely brilliant up and coming acts from the UK and Ireland and of course the very best indigenous acts Northern Ireland has to offer, so we are positive that the music helping us celebrate our 15th year will allows us to do so in some fine style.”

Stendhal director John Cartwright supplies the following bios for the acts confirmed this year

Lightning Seeds

The Lightning Seeds, founded by Ian Broudie, emerged as an influential musical entity from the post-punk scene of Liverpool.

Founded in 1989 after Broudie’s transition from producer back to songwriter, The Lightning Seeds were borne from some initial home recordings, where he played all instruments, culminated in the track 'Pure', which was released under the Lightning Seeds moniker.

The track’s success, driven by airplay from influential DJs like John Peel, showcased the potential of The Lightning Seeds in the music industry. Broudie's approach of initially working as a one-man band before expanding to a full group not only underlined his musical versatility but also his ability to singularly drive the creative process, a trait that makes the act a fascinating festival draw.

The release of the album 'Sense' in 1991 marked a significant evolution in The Lightning Seeds’ sound, influenced heavily by the contemporary techniques of sampling and looping used in hip-hop. The blend of structured pop arrangements with new sampling technologies not only diversified their sound but also broadened their appeal. Tracks like 'Sense' and 'The Life of Riley' became emblematic of this phase, reflecting a matured sonic palette that resonated well with both critics and audiences. This adaptability and willingness to experiment are qualities that make The Lightning Seeds an engaging live act, capable of delivering a dynamic performance at any festival.

Over the years, The Lightning Seeds have demonstrated a remarkable ability to evolve and adapt to the changing musical landscape, from their indie beginnings to achieving mainstream success. The transformation into a live band with the release of 'Jollification' and their ability to produce enduring hits like Lucky You, Sugar Coated Iceberg and Pure have cemented their place in the pantheon of great festival acts. Their performances are not just concerts but celebrations of a rich musical journey, characterised by a blend of nostalgic hits and fresh adaptations, making them a perennial favourite in the festival circuit. This ability to connect with diverse audiences, coupled with Broudie’s seasoned musicianship and production prowess, ensures that The Lightning Seeds remains a must-see act, continuing to draw crowds with their timeless appeal and innovative music.

Kate Nash

Nearly twenty years into her ever-evolving career, London and LA-based, Brit award-winning singer, songwriter, actor and activist Kate Nash has seen it all, from finding huge commercial success in 2007’s hit single Foundations, reaching number 1 in the UK, rocking the world as an independent punk artist and even starring in HBO’s hit wrestling drama, GLOW. Nash isn't finished shape-shifting just yet; in June 2024, she released her fifth album, 9 Sad Symphonies, under the legendary label Kill Rock Stars. Inspired by old Hollywood, vintage musicals and a desperate quest to find beauty in a rotten world, it's another sonic shift following her “rage-y” recent output. Two things fueled that moment of the album's creation: her work on Only Gold, a musical Nash co-created, and a global pandemic that curtailed filming on the fourth season of GLOW and sent Nash – and everyone – into a tailspin. These melodic, bright-on-the-surface but deeply layered songs started to emerge out of creative scenarios that had been completely changed by the pandemic. On 9 Sad Symphonies, Nash has taken another huge step towards cementing her place as one of Britain's most unique and fearless talents.

In Canada, Ed has made several appearances at the prestigious Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, even hosting a gala in 2006 and touring with Just for Laughs in 2008.

In the US he has performed at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and in top comedy clubs in New York and LA, as well as making five appearances on NBC's Late Night With Conan O'Brien.

In the UK and Ireland, Ed has become a regular fixture on television and radio. He has appeared on or presented a range of shows on BBC radio, including The Unbelievable Truth and What’s So Funny. Born in Dublin, McCabe burst onto the music scene with his breakout single, "Maniac 2000," which not only topped the Irish charts but also became one of the country's best-selling records of all time. His ability to blend tribal house with catchy hooks made him an immediate sensation.

Beyond his success as a solo artist, McCabe has had a prolific career as a remixer, working with international artists and achieving commercial success with remixes like Gavin James' "Nervous."

His influence extends to radio, where he has held significant roles, including Director of Music and Sound at RTE 2FM. Mark McCabe's DJ sets are legendary for their energy, mixing his timeless hits with the latest in dance music, making him a beloved figure in both club and festival settings.

The Orb

Thirty-five years since Alex Paterson lit the multi-coloured touchpaper on The Orb’s interstellar space odyssey, he continues to swerve becoming his own tribute act, by never standing still and preparing a cluster of fresh new projects.

The Orb initially manifested as visionary mischief-makers in 1988’s acid house revolution but it was 1990’s landmark debut album The Orb’s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld that made the dance world sit up and take notice as tracks from that record turned The Orb into a mind-blowing live experience.

Second album U.F. Orb was launched at the Planetarium and entered the UK album charts at number one in July 1992.

With an ever rotating cast of co-creators, a continuous string of charting albums, numerous EPs, compilations, mix records, and countless remixes since, The Orb remains a truly essential and still pioneering recording project and an ever engaging live presence.

Joshua Burnside

Joshua Burnside is an experimental folk songwriter, singer and producer. He takes influence from alternative electronica and Irish folk, chopping and blending them with a mixture of found sounds, world music and unorthodox production methods.

Whilst his first album Ephrata took in lush landscapes, technological horrors, night terrors and wistful columbian vistas (set against a bed of Irish folk, cumbia rhythms, and electronica), his second Into The Depths Of Hell, took a far darker approach. Melding swirls of clanging metallic found sounds, alt-rock and Irish songwriting traditions, it was supported by UK and US national radio and international tastemakers NPR, Guitar Magazine, CLASH, The Guardian, The Times and more. Released in February 2025, his third album, The Teeth Of Time, sits comfortably and confrontationally between the alt folk realms of Lankum and John Francis Flynn, whilst retaining the indie singer-songwriter and traditional folk elements of Josh’s signature songwriting.

Problem Patterns

Problem Patterns are four shouty queers who write songs for right now, swapping roles and instruments to get their point across about whatever angers them this week.

After many lonely nights screaming alone in their bedrooms over the state of the world, Alanah, Bethany, Bev and Ciara (aka ABBA) came together in 2018 to invent a new genre they called PUNK. It's shouty, it's heavy, it's tongue in cheek, it's inclusive, it's hopeful and it's fun.

The four DIY punk dads are all about creating havoc in celebratory and cathartic spaces. Bigger than The Beatles, but not yet quite as big as Slipknot, the band have played notable support slots with Le Tigre, Bob Vylan, Dream Wife, Stiff Little Fingers & Ash. In 2024, they landed a coveted spot as Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition finalists, leading them to perform on the festival’s Park Stage that year.

Clements writes about empathy and escape, the mundane and the unmeasurable. Drawing from influences across indie folk and alternative rock, Clements cites Bon Iver, The National and James Vincent McMorrow as inspirations for The Garden. The album moves deftly through a musical backdrop that seamlessly melds electronic elements with the essence of folk instrumentation, with Clements' unflinching vocals guiding listeners through themes of love, loss and belief.

Following the release of his debut album, 'The Longest Day in History' in 2016, Clements established himself as one of Northern Ireland's most distinctive voices. In 2022, he stood in as lead singer of Two Door Cinema Club on their South American festival run. He was invited to Washington D.C. in 2023 to perform at the capital's St Patrick's Day Gala Concert, alongside James Vincent McMorrow, Sam Amidon, SOAK and Tolü Makay.

He has a record 18 straight appearances at Byron’s East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, a record that is not likely to ever be broken, and one which bears testimony to his amazing live performances and popularity with festival goers.

Cara draws on her soul background (she’s toured Europe and the United States with singers such as Jamiroquai and the hugely popular Corinne Bailey-Rae), and although blessed with a sensational voice she was not content to be labelled as ‘just a singer’. She has taken to drumming duties as well as washboards, flute and tin whistle, sometimes all at once.

Together this pair will take you on a musical journey with ample, boisterous highs, and longing, bluesy lows. From the Australian outback to the Canadian shield, Hat Fitz & Cara put on a show that is guaranteed to energize and invigorate.

Micky Callisto

Mickey Callisto is unlike anything around at the moment, he is a self-aware beacon of positivity who celebrates being yourself in the purest form. A new kind of popstar, he makes psychedelic, bedroom-made synth-pop bangers whilst he has separated the ego from the self, seeing everyone as equal and bringing a refreshing outlook and experience that is set to break out in 2025.

Born in Sunderland, Mickey’s first foray into music was teaching himself opera after being inspired by Durham Cathedral Choristers and the classical requiems at the age of seven. After his voice broke and he was no longer able to pursue that particular musical path, Mickey was soon taken by Freddie Mercury. At school they put on ‘We Will Rock You’ and after quick Google his life was changed. Alongside Freddie, he was inspired by some of the legendary frontmen like Mick Jagger and Robert Plant, taken by the stage presence of these performers.

The stage name Mickey Callisto comes from his love of space and astronomy – Callisto being a moon of Jupiter. It’s a persona he first thought of when he was fourteen. He would draw pictures of the character he had in mind. It was round this time he started to teach himself piano, though he couldn’t quite nail the sound he had in mind, it was soon after that he joined a psychedelic rock band, playing keys and synths. Mac Demarco and Tame Impala soon entered his world and he began to explore the warm psychedelia and lo-fi -bedroom pop of these acts at home, making tunes on Nord.

A life-changing night out at The Whites Hotel in 2019 saw widescreen Italo disco make an instant impact, and dressed in a £30 ski suit he bought from Affleck’s Palace in Manchester, he has never looked back, blending the synths and chords of Italo-disco with lo-fi pop and the classics such as ABBA and Pink Floyd to create something that he has been pursuing ever since.

Clubbing has been central in helping Mickey find his confidence, a place where he has experimented with his moves and look. The results have been thrilling. His mesmerising live show is quickly becoming an essential act. Sold-out shows in his adopted hometown of Liverpool have seen Mickey become a cult figure there, but he is certain to soon break even further.

Junior Brother

Following both a global pandemic and an acclaimed, landmark debut album, inimitable Irish Alt-Folk act Junior Brother returns with his new album “The Great Irish Famine”, and a new single titled “No Snitch”. The album comes on the heels of his lauded 2019 album “Pull The Right Rope” and is out 2nd September via multidisciplinary Irish label Strange Brew.

An idiosyncratic, challenging and richly lyrical singer/ songwriter, Junior Brother is the pseudonym of Co. Kerry, Ireland singer Ronan Kealy. Chosen as The Irish Times’ Best Irish Act of 2019 and nominated for the 2019 Choice Music Prize for Album of the Year, Junior Brother has built a rabid following thanks to unmissable live shows, and music both excitingly forward-looking and anciently evocative. His strange stories unfold with reckless abandon upon a distinctive guitar and foot tambourine accompaniment, influenced as much by the avant-garde as music from the Middle Ages and his home place in rural Ireland.

In addition to earning a Choice Music Prize nomination, Junior Brother's trailblazing debut album “Pull The Right Rope”, also saw Kealy garner two nominations at the 2019 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, for Best Folk Album and Best Emerging Folk Act. Similarly, vigorous approval from modern-day Irish figureheads such as the Rubberbandits and Cillian Murphy has furthered Junior Brother's stock, the latter playing Junior Brother several times on his BBC Radio 6 Music Show. Along-side further airplay, his television performances include appearances on RTÉ’s the Tommy Tiernan show, Other Voices and the Choice Music Prize Awards night in Vicar Street.

"The Great Irish Famine" leaps boldly forward into an exciting new chapter, and into a shaken new world - staggeringly profound, brutally beautiful in its epic sweep. The lead single “No Snitch” - which is released digitally with a 7” release to follow – is an intoxicating first taste of this new material. A track of towering, bruised catharsis, Kealy’s emotive and powerful vocals fluctuate across the track’s temperamental instrumentation which is both at once tumultuous and calming.
