The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) yesterday morning responded to a house fire at Andyville, Wismar, Linden.
A release from the GFS said that the fire, reported at approximately 5:20 am, completely destroyed a single-story wooden and concrete structure measuring 8.1 by 6.2 metres.
The affected building was owned and occupied by 39-year-old Keon Parks, who is now homeless as a result of the blaze. Firefighters arrived promptly at 5:29 am, and the first fire suppression jet was deployed by 5:30 am. Two fire appliances, Water Carriers 12 and 19, responded to the scene led by Section Leader Yaw and five firefighters.
Preliminary investigations indicate that an unattended lit mosquito coil ignited nearby combustible materials, causing the fire.
The Guyana Fire Service urged residents to exercise caution when using mosquito coils or any open flames, ensuring they are never left unattended and are kept away from flammable items.
