Fire causes $125K in damage to Maui home, nearby church

A fire in Waiehu Tuesday has left two people without a home and caused an estimated $125,000 in damages.

WAIEHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fire in Waiehu Tuesday has left two people without a home and caused an estimated $125,000 in damage.

The Maui Fire Department was called to a house fire along Kahekili Highway near Akakuu Street shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters said they arrived on the scene and found the fire had spread to the nearby Waiheu Community Church and some of the surrounding brush.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency sent an alert just before 4:30 p.m.

The fire was extinguished at around 7:40 p.m.

Viewers who were miles away told Hawaii News Now they could smell the smoke.

Officials did not call for any evacuations.

Damage estimates to the home and church are estimated to be $113,000 and $12,000 for the contents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
