LINDON — A Payson man is facing criminal charges accusing him of driving 142 mph on the freeway.

The 21-year-old man was charged Thursday in 4th District Court with failing to stop for an officer, a third-degree felony; exhibition driving, a class A misdemeanor; reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor; and speeding, an infraction.

About 1:50 a.m. on May 25, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper observed a 2018 Audi A4 traveling 142 mph on I-15, according to charging documents.

The vehicle had its headlights off as it took the next exit after the trooper turned on his emergency lights, the charges state. The trooper followed the driver and eventually pulled him over.

The man was arrested, booked into the Utah County Jail, and his vehicle was impounded, a police booking affidavit states.

South Jordan police made a similar arrest of another driver at the end of last year when a 20-year-old man was arrested for also going 142 mph.
