Firefighters responded to a basement fire near the Shelburne-South Burlington town line last week and were able to contain the blaze before it spread to the rest of the home.
The South Burlington Fire Department was dispatched June 9 at 5:34 a.m., to 20 O’Brien Drive for a report of a fire in the building. This structure is a one-story, residential duplex. The 911 caller, who lives there, stated flames and smoke were visible.
According to a department press release, firefighters arrived within six minutes and found light smoke coming from the open front door. They found a fire in a basement living space, which they quickly brought under control while also confirming everyone were out of the building before making sure the fire didn’t spread to other parts of the home.
The department stated the fire damage was confined to the basement with smoke damage there and on the first floor. There was no damage to the adjacent living unit, and no one was injured.
According to the department, 17 first responders were on the scene, including three from the Vermont Air National Guard Fire Department. The University of Vermont Rescue, Saint Michael’s Fire Department and off-duty South Burlington personnel provided additional coverage in South Burlington during the incident
The fire cause and damage estimate is still undetermined and is being investigated by the South Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office.
The South Burlington Fire Department reminds everyone to keep combustible materials at least three feet away from heating appliances and sources of heat.
