Women for Kansas Barton County Chapter welcomes Evan Altman, ACLU voting rights organizer, who will present “ACLU-Kansas Know Your Rights Protesting,” on Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m. in Great Bend’s Front Door Community Center, 1615 10th St.
Altman is leading voter organizing efforts in Sedgwick and Wyandotte counties, while also leading the ACLU’s statewide voter registration program, geared toward informing Kansans with felonies of their right to vote. He is tasked with developing volunteer leaders for the civil liberties movement, implementing training that builds the capacity of ACLU supporters, mobilizing grassroots support for campaign objectives, and educating Kansas residents about campaign objectives through person-to-person contact.
While studying political science at Washburn University, he served with AmeriCorps VISTA, a national service program focused on eradicating poverty in the United States.
It was through this service where he witnessed firsthand the adverse impacts of systemic policies on marginalized communities, becoming a passionate advocate for those communities.
