Police have said their determination to get justice for the family of a young Coventry boy who was killed in a hit-and-run crash is as 'strong as ever.' Keaton Slater died on Radford Road last June.

Schoolboy Keaton had been walking to Hickory Chickory with friends when he was struck by a BMW. Detectives said it was believed to have been travelling at around 80mph.

Keaton sustained catastrophic injuries and tragically died. West Midlands Police launched a major investigation and two days later released an image of 21-year-old Dolars Aleksanders.

Aleksanders is wanted by West Midlands Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. It is believed he is currently in Latvia.

Louise and Clint Slater have been campaigning for justice over the past year and have been supported by MP Taiwo Owatemi. On Thursday (June 12), Ms Owatemi issued an update on efforts to have Aleksanders extradited.

She said: “I know many in our community are still seeking answers after the heartbreaking death of Keaton Slater. I wanted to share an update on the steps I am taking to support the Slaters and push for progress toward securing justice.

“Firstly, I have met with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). In my discussion with the CPS, they have informed me that they are meeting with the Latvian Prosecution Office to discuss the different options available to move forward with this prosecution.

“Secondly, I have heard from the Security Minister (Dan Jarvis). He has reached out to his counterpart as he recognises the importance of having good extradition relationships with Latvia. I know how important this is for the community getting justice for Keaton and his family, and I will continue to work hard and keep you updated on the progress that has been made.”

Police said investigations into the hit-and-run are ongoing, and they are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service. Officers said their thoughts remain with the Slaters.

In a statement to CoventryLive, West Midlands Police said: “It has been a year since Keaton tragically died, and our determination to get justice for him and his family remains as strong as ever. Keaton was a young boy who should have had his life ahead of him. His death has touched us all.

“Our investigation into the collision and whereabouts of prime suspect Dolars Aleksanders is ongoing, and we are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to progress this. Our thoughts remain with the family of Keaton.”
