Greece battles multiple wildfires amid high fire risk warnings

Greece faced 36 wildfires nationwide in the last 24 hours, with 32 swiftly contained and firefighters still battling four active blazes.

One of those blazes is burning in northern Greece, while fires in low vegetation in Lasithi, Crete and near the northern port city of Thessaloniki have been fully contained.

A forest fire ignited Saturday afternoon near Serres, with 44 firefighters, 14 vehicles, three aircraft, and support from local water trucks and machinery working to contain it. The fire does not threaten residential areas.

Almost simultaneously, a blaze broke out in an agricultural area near Thessaloniki. Authorities deployed 35 firefighters, 10 vehicles, a helicopter and local support to bring it under control.

Meanwhile, the earlier fire in Kato and Epano Krya, Lasithi, has been fully contained.

The Civil Protection Agency forecasts a very high fire risk Sunday across the Dodecanese, parts of Crete, and the Northern Aegean.
