The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has indicated that the Agricultural Protection Branch is a significant addition, because the police recognise the implications that can come from praedial larceny.
The branch was officially launched yesterday at the Specialised Operations Branch in Kingston.
The JCF said the launch, held under the theme, “Securing Agriculture, Sustaining the Nation”, marks a significant step in safeguarding Jamaica’s agricultural sector, recognizing its crucial role in national security and economic stability.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Warren Clarke, who is in charge of the Strategic Operation Portfolio, stressed the importance of agriculture to the country, while outlining the lasting impact praedial larceny could have on sustenance.
DCP Clarke said the branch will use a multi-prong approach to tackling praedial larceny.
He added that the branch will seek to disrupt the link between praedial larceny and organised crime, particularly gangs.
Meantime, Minister of Agriculture Floyd Green has lauded the police’s commitment to strengthening agricultural security, highlighting its focused efforts in combating praedial larceny.
The minister noted that the efforts of the police in this area “can no longer be questioned,” as there is now an established branch focused on safeguarding the agricultural sector.
