Several local lawmakers are expressing their condolences after Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed Saturday morning.

In a post on X, Gov. Dan McKee (D-RI) said the following:

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D-MA) also issued a statement, saying:

I’m horrified to hear about the shootings in Minnesota. Lawmakers and their loved ones getting shot for their beliefs is yet another sickening act of political violence in a country where it’s become all too common. I’m holding the family of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark in my heart and praying for the full recovery of Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. This is not normal. It is not who we are as Americans, and we must all condemn political violence in the strongest possible terms.

Rhode Island House Speaker Rep. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Warwick) also issued a statement, saying:

“My heart is broken over the shooting death of former Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband. I knew her from our meetings at national conferences and I had dinner with her last December. She was a warm, kind and very intelligent lawmaker who cared deeply for her state of Minnesota. There is no place for senseless violence in our political system.”

Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were also injured in the shooting. Police are still searching for the suspect.
