RED BLUFF, Calif. — A 44-year-old man died following his arrest by Red Bluff police on Monday morning, the police department said.
Officers were dispatched to Main Street and Highway 36 West at 9:20 a.m. on Monday, June 16, for a report of a possible stolen bicycle. When they arrived, officers tried to detain a man, identified as Gary Eagle, 44, who they said physically resisted their efforts. Additional officers arrived to assist and placed the man in custody.
Shortly after his arrest, police said Eagle began showing signs of medical distress. Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures and requested emergency medical assistance. However, despite CPR and other efforts by officers and responding medical personnel, Eagle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Tehama County District Attorney's Office Bureau of Investigations is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including Eagle's actions and the force used by officers.
