BSU Nursing Academy cultivates future healthcare professionals

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - Rising ninth-graders from around the state have completed Bluefield State University’s Junior Nursing Academy with graduation ceremonies held Thursday at the Medical Education Center.
The academy invites students who are interested in nursing careers to attend the three-day academy, which is held in conjunction with WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital and Princeton Rescue Squad.
This year, 26 students who were selected from applicants across West Virginia participated. They were selected based on their academic achievement, essays and interest in nursing.
“This academy represents a critical investment in West Virginia’s healthcare future,” said Dr. Darrin Martin, President of Bluefield State University. “By introducing students to nursing careers at this pivotal age, we’re helping to build the next generation of healthcare professionals our state desperately needs.”
The intensive program provided participating students with hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of nursing practice. Working alongside professionals from WVU Medicine/Princeton Community Hospital and Princeton Rescue Squad, students gained insight into both hospital-based nursing care and emergency medical services.
Students had the opportunity to, among other things, work with nurses, visit simulation labs, tour the emergency room and radiology department at PCH, as well as get a close-up look at medical transport helicopter.
They also learned about the different career paths in the nursing field.
Martin said these programs are essential for addressing the state’s healthcare workforce need.
