UPDATE: RIDEM identifies swimmer who drowned in water at Lincoln Woods

LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) has released the name of a swimmer who drowned in a body of water at Lincoln Woods State Park on Tuesday night.

Victor Deleon Mendez, 21, of Providence was recovered from the area of Sunset Cove at approximately 8:10 p.m.

The call to RIDEM was received at approximately 6 p.m., and two of the department’s law enforcement officers began searching for Mendez five minutes after he was last seen.

RIDEM said that visibility was extremely poor during the search.

Lincoln police and fire department personnel and Rhode Island State Police also responded to the scene to help in the search.

The Lincoln Fire Department Dive Team recovered Mendez’s body, according to RIDEM.

A second swimmer drowned an hour later in a separate incident at Georgiaville Pond in Smithfield.
